Five Phases from the Moon

A guide to the 8 phases of the moon. The final phase is called the ‘waning crescent’ and it occurs when a crescent moon is visible but it is waning and growing smaller as the cycle proceeds. Sometimes people also like to talk of the ‘old moon’, a very thin crescent that occurs just before the Moon is invisible again at the start of the cycle, the new moon.

New moon – The first phase for us to consider is the ‘new moon’. Strangely enough, this is when the Moon’s illuminated side is not visible from Earth at all, because the Moon is sitting between the Earth and the Sun. So a new moon is actually invisible to us. Occasionally if the alignment of the Sun, Moon and Earth is just right, then a total eclipse of the Sun by the Moon is possible. A total solar eclipse can only occur during the new moon phase of the lunar cycle.

Part 5: Moon Phases

A lab manual developed by the University of Iowa Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Background:The 4 primary moon phases are:New MoonFirst QuarterFull MoonThird Quarter (Last Quarter)The moon cycles with these four phases roughly every seven days. The lunar cycle is simply around 29 days, which makes it slightly shorter than the usual thirty day period. So, you’ll be able to see two same phases within the same celandar month. This is when the phrase ‘once inside a blue moon’ originates from. The ‘blue moon’ happens when there’s two full moons inside a thirty day period. There’s also four secondary phases that occupy the area between your primary moon phases:Waxing CrescentWaxing GibbousWaning GibbousWaning CrescentThese names may go through arbitrary, which means you should spend time searching in the diagram towards the top of the page to locate patterns which help you remember their ordering. For instance, the crescents occur only round the New Moon. Also, understanding the direction from the sun and then the side from the moon is illuminated is essential. If you have doubts convincing yourself of methods the moon need to look inside a certain phase, read this simulation from UNLV: UNLV Moon Bisection SimulationExerciseMoon Phases1.

These eight phases are, in order, new Moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full Moon, waning gibbous, third quarter and waning crescent.

What is the correct order of the first 5 moon phases?

The moon phases in order are new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent.

What is phase 7 of the moon?

7. Last Quarter Moon The moon is three-quarters of its way around Earth. It is in its last quarter phase.

What are the 4 phases of the moon called?

Astronomers recognize four primary moon phases (new, first quarter, full, last quarter) and four interstitial phases (waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous waning crescent).

Are there 8 or 12 phases of the moon?

Kate Broome on April 13, 2018 30 Comments 🔥! The 8 moon phases in order are New moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and finally Waning Crescent. The moon has phases the wanes, waxes, and even sometimes we can't even see the moon during its phase.
