We live in an energy-hungry culture. People’s demand for electricity and fuel taxes Earth’s supply of nonrenewable resources and forces us to find and use renewable and alternative sources. This unit acquaints students with the types of energy that people rely on and how they are generated and used. Nine energy resources are compared: crude oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear power, biomass, solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal. Students will learn that there are benefits and drawbacks to using each resource.

Exploring Alternative Forms Of Energy Unit

Lesson plans and resources to teach an alternative energy unit to 4th and 5th graders. Unit is designed to bring engineering concepts and principles to the classroom.

Through this module, students build an awareness of the concept that energy could be converted in one form into another. Students also build a preliminary knowledge of forces, motion, and air that may be built on in later grade levels. As students participate in the engineering design process, they create a deep conceptual knowledge of the job of scientists and engineers.

Students investigate the science ideas behind what makes a pinwheel spin, why a pinwheel or wind turbine spins faster or slower, how the wind can be converted into electrical energy through a wind turbine, and how to optimize wind turbine blades to generate the most electrical output. Students engage in the design challenge of designing, testing, and refining a wind turbine to convert wind energy into electrical energy. Through the design process, students test and compare multiple solutions, build on science ideas to inform design characteristics, and relate the speed of an object to the energy of that object.

Fifth Grade, Energy & Power Science Projects

Do you want to build a solar-powered car? How about enter it in a competition and race it against other people’s designs? If so, this is the project for you! These instructions will show you how to get started building a solar-powered car that you can enter in a science or engineering fair. No experience needed.

Video advice: Forms of Energy

This instructional video is about the five different forms of energy. It gives an explanation and example of each one: Light/Radiant Energy, Sound Energy, Heat/Thermal Energy, Mechanical Energy, and Chemical Energy.

Explore Our Science Videos – Whether you are working, studying, or being entertained, much of our daily routines rely on being plugged-in. You probably don’t spend a lot of time thinking about where all that power comes from, but someone has to! Figuring out the best ways to produce energy is a big job that is growing along with the world’s population. Energy can also be a hot topic with argements about whether to invest in fossil fuels or clean renewable energies like solar, wind, water and geothermal. Take a first-hand look at some of the problems and challenges scientists and engineers are tackling as they look at making and storing energy.

Fifth Grade

On November 4, our class went to the Sullivan Performing Arts Center to watch the live stage show, “Annie. ” One of our classmates was the leading role, Annie. The entire cast of “Annie” is incredibly talented and was a joy to watch. We will remember this event for many, many years.

Every year, the fifth grade class got its Colonial America unit and causes it to be interactive– an entire physical representation of existence within the three colonial regions. Students undertake the roles of colonial citizens and investigate the facets of colonial existence within their particular region (Colonial, Middle, or Southern). The actual fun begins whenever we build rooms and companies to showcase the students’ research. Students positively have fun playing the design and planning along with the physical building of the rooms and companies. We’re able to not inflict of the with no genius and support of Denise Henley, our superstar jack-of-all-trades. Mrs. Denise truly teaches our fifth graders how you can think and arrange for themselves. She offers suggestions on design and welcomes students’ own ideas. Students build self-confidence and motivation. They learn how to take initiative. Real existence training occur behind the curtain in the Colonial Fair, because of Mrs. Denise.

Solar Energy – Fifth grade students learn about different kinds of energy in science class. They explore how energy companies collect and store different energies for use. Teaching students about renewable and nonrenewable sources of energy gives them the necessary information to become better energy consumers. Educated consumers make better energy choices that may reduce the negative human impact on the planet. Solar Energy The sun produces more energy that the human population needs. Fifth-graders learn how to use solar energy to reduce the need for fossil fuels. Students compare and contrast the cost and effectiveness of different kinds of solar cells and which geographic areas offer the best conditions for building solar arrays. Students can experiment with solar power by constructing a solar water heater, solar oven or brewing tea in a glass jar sitting in direct sunlight. Students brainstorm ideas each person can implement to use solar power. Simple Batteries Fifth-graders explore how to store energy by building any one or more of three simple batteries.
