And along the east side of the Sierra Nevada, we can see the original rock into which the granite of the Sierra Nevada intruded. This original rock consists of older sedimentary and volcanic rock–that dates from the Cambrian Period through the Jurassic– much of which was metamorphosed by the heat from the intruding granite. The photo below shows the Cretaceous granite below (light colored rock) and the dark-colored sedimentary (now metamorphic) rock above. These older rocks that are intruded by the granite are called “roof pendants” because they show the roof of the batholith.

Abstract

Rocks in the major roof pendants of the eastern Sierra Nevada have been mapped in various degrees of detail to better understand their stratigraphy, internal structure, and geologic history, and their relationships to other rock assemblages in the region. Ten formations ranging in age from Middle(?) Cambrian to Middle(?) Permian are recognized in these pendants, which along with other minor pendants, constitute a tectonostratigraphic unit called the Morrison block. Rocks of the Morrison block were first deformed by north-northwest-trending thrust faults and footwall syn-clines involving strata as young as Early or Middle Permian. The Sierra Nevada mountain range consists of a vast array of different geologic features. One of these features is in the form of what are known as roof pendants. Roof pendants span through the central and southern portions of the eastern Sierra Nevada. Representing the geologic history of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, metamorphic roof pendants offer a glimpse into the past. These features can be described in large scale as a discontinuous chain of metamorphically altered rock dating back before the Sierra Nevada batholith formation. Defined by Paul C. Bateman (1992), a roof pendant is “A mass of metamorphic rock that is entirely surrounded by plutonic rock and presumed to be a downward projection of rocks that overlaid the plutonic rocks before erosion.” In this report, an overview of the roof pendants within the Sierra Nevada range is given. Specifically, it was found that the processes that resulted in roof pendants took place in the Paleozoic and early Mesozoic age. Using data from several sources, it was also concluded that metasomatism, and contact metamorphism played the biggest roles in the formation of the roof pendants. Data from research on these features is immense. Because most scientific reports on the roof pendants deal with one specific pendant per report, much data can be reported on this topic. To deal with this, general trends were identified by correlating scientific work done on separate roof pendants.

When I was in the Eastern Sierra in California a while ago, I thumbed through a book on it’s geology. It mentioned that there used to be a sea over the Sierra batholith, and that its sediments still exist as roof pendants on some of the Sierra’s tallest mountains. It also said that erosion has created some cave structures in this pendant.

The northern Sierra NevadaMountains adjacent to Interstate Highway 80 consist of two regimes of rocks. The older rocks (Paleozoic and Mesozoic), sometimes referred to as the Subjacent or basement rocks, consist primarily of various groups of rocks that were formed in a marine (ocean) environment (e. g., sea floor shales, sandstones, volcanics). These materials were heated and pressed until the mid-Cretaceous and hence today are largely low grade metamorphic rocks. These rocks were also intruded by granitic rocks in Jurassic and Cretaceous times. The granitic rocks that make up the Sierra Nevada Batholith have been exposed by erosion that stripped away most of the older metamorphic materials. Occasionally remnants of the older metamorphic rocks are found as roof pendants or where erosion has not been so severe. In the northwestern corner (northern foothills area) of the Sierra where the uplift and tilt was minimal, these rocks are relatively low and a large mass of the metamorphic rocks still survive.

Mount Morrison Roof Pendants Project

To answer these questions we looked into many different papers. The most notable papers were from Stevens and Greene (et al. 1997 and 1999), as well as Chapman et al. 2011. Other papers that aided in answering our research questions included, Stevens and Pelley et al. 2005, and Russell and Nokleberg et al. 1977.

The very first day in our field research started along Minaret road, where we measured bedding and cleavage of the phyllite to schist outcrop. This outcrop symbolized the accretion and metamorphism of the island arc terrain because it sutured to the United States Plate. Then we gone to live in Tobacco Flats, where we hiked up a glacial valley to determine bedding and cleavage of the vast marble layer. There have been several dikes, which cut with the marble unit. One dike which was of great interest would be a eco-friendly dike, that was coated with epidote. We determined this would be a mafic dike, which with the incorporation of water and heat created numerous epidote because of the great deal of Calcium inside the surrounding marble. Our second field day was spent searching in the deformed yet united nations-metamorphosed rocks towards the east within the White-colored Mountain tops. These rocks symbolized the protoliths from the marble unit we measured the day before.
