Top Stories – Louisiana researchers have identified 14 new species of shrews on an Indonesian island where seven in that genus were previously knownNEW ORLEANS — Louisiana researchers have identified 14 new species of shrews on an Indonesian island where seven in that genus were previously known. There were so many and some look so similar that after a while Louisiana State University biologist Jake Esselstyn and his colleagues began hunting for Latin words meaning “ordinary. ”“Otherwise I don’t know what we would have named them,” said Esselstyn, who also named the seventh known species of the pointy-nosed insect-eating mammals on the island of Sulawesi. That’s why shrews whose species names mean such things as “hairy-tailed” and ”long” have been joined by “Crocidura mediocris,” “C. normalis,” “C. ordinaria,” and “C. solita” — the last of those meaning “usual. ”The 101-page paper will be “super valuable for all current and future students of mammal biodiversity,” said Nathan S. Labeling Mammals of this State

GrasslandsLouisiana has some remaining grasslands, though much of it has been destroyed by agriculture and development. The coastal prairie is found along the coastal plain of southwestern Louisiana and is the southernmost tip of the tallgrass prairie that is found in the Midwestern U.S. It was the home to herds of bison, pronghorn antelope and red wolves as well as many smaller mammals, birds and insects. The coastal prairie of Louisiana once covered a million acres, but only 1% remains today – less than 250 acres. The rest was lost to farming and development. Another danger to the remaining coastal prairie is the invasion of non-native plants that compete with the native species. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has made restoration of the coastal prairie one of their top priorities for this region as have other groups (Louisiana Nature Conservancy, Louisiana Heritage Program, Cajun Prairie Restoration Society). There are also coastal dune grasslands above the tideline in the dunes along the coastline.

Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge

The largest urban National Wildlife Refuge in the United States is located only 15 minutes from the French Quarter. Bayou Sauvage supports over 340 bird species, including wading and secretive marsh birds dependent on the refuge for survival. There are also healthy populations of alligators, turtles, otters, fish, and other wild animal species. Try your hand at canoeing, hiking, or birdwatching as you take in Lousiana’s natural beauty.

All the national wildlife refuge is inside the city limits of recent Orleans, only fifteen minutes in the French Quarter and downtown, which makes it the country’s largest urban national wildlife refuge. Most from the refuge is inside massive hurricane protection levees, built to have to wait storm surges and keep water levels within the low-laying city.

Tens of thousands of people pass through the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge each day, yet most of them don’t realize it or get to see the attractions it offers. Driving along I-10 in New Orleans East between the twin bridges that cross Lake Pontchartrain and mile marker 249, you are going through the heart of the national wildlife refuge but, other than an occasional waterfowl flying overhead, you won’t see much of the vast marsh’s beauty until you get off the main highway and explore it on foot or by boat.
