We all have that one friend who is glued to the smartphone screen and who's phone regularly chimes with updates. Dr Samuel Veissiere from the Psychiatry Department of McGill University is giving an evolutionary perspective to this maladaptive habit. Since our basic needs of food and shelter are readily taken care of, the need for pro-social rewards and the current scale of hyper-connectivity pushes our brain's reward system towards unhealthy smartphone addictions. The solution is turning off the push notifications and deciding fixed times for checking smartphones thereby slowly regaining control.
